Since this compressor was not too dirty to begin with, and did not leak, I decided to paint it. I used fairly expensive Valspar oil paint. (highly recommended). I did the top (green) part, my father in law did the bottom (red) part.
Despite the fact that the compressor was relatively clean (see pictures of it as I brought it home), I spent at least 1.5 hours degreasing it several times. I also sanded it.
