After getting the generator into place, the next task I had was setting up a fuel tank for it. For flexibility reasons, I wanted it to be based on a jerry can, so that I would not be stuck with a huge tank that is hard to move. Our local ordinances also prohibit large fuel tanks.
I decided to take a jerry can, dril two holes and weld in two 1/4" NPT pipe nipples. To avoid having this jerry can explode while welding, I drained all diesel fuel from it and filled it completely with hot water. After an hour, I let some water out of the tank so that water would be almost to the level where I would weld the fittings. To test safety of the tank, I stuck a blow torch into it, and it would not explode (as I expected based on basic physics and properties of diesel fuel).
Welding the pipe nipples (one long, almost to the bottom, for fuel supply, and one short for fuel return) was almost uneventful, except that I forgot to turn on the argon gas in the beginning.
You also can see the breather valve of the tank (a little brass button).
